Step 1.
Make a preliminary base. Lay it flat on the table so that the closed point (the top) is at 12 o'clock and the open flaps are at 6 o'clock.
Step 2.
Form a valley fold by bringing the lower right edge of the front flap to the vertical center line.
Step 3.
Form a valley fold by bringing the lower left edge of the front flap to the vertical center line.
additional information
- The front face now has two triangles folded toward the center.
- The top edges of these triangles form a straight horizontal line.
Step 4.
Make a horizontal valley fold by folding the top closed point down to the intersection where the triangles meet the center line. Crease firmly, then unfold.
Step 5.
Reverse the previous fold into a mountain fold. Crease firmly, then unfold.
additional information
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 several times to make the paper supple.
Step 6.
Completely unfold the paper and lay it flat in a diamond orientation.
additional information
- The diagonals should be mountain folds and the medians (horizontal/vertical centers) should be valley folds.
- If not, flip the paper over.
- The center of the paper now has a small square crease from steps 4 and 5.
Step 7.
Lift the bottom corner and align it with the bottom edge of the small center square.
Step 8.
Lift the top corner and align it with the top edge of the small center square.
Step 9.
Lift the right corner and align it with the right edge of the small center square.
Step 10.
Lift the left corner and align it with the left edge of the small center square.
Step 11.
Gather the four corners together, bringing them toward the center. The small square should remain flat against the table.
Step 12.
Flip the model over so the four points face the table and the small square faces the ceiling. Gently press the diagonals of the small square.
additional information
- These diagonals now become valley folds.
Step 13.
Pinch each corner of the small square to collapse it.
additional information
- The top of the fold forms a horizontal cross. You now have four symmetrical flaps: front, back, right, and left.
Step 14.
Fold the front flap to the left, laying it against the left flap.
Step 15.
Fold the back flap to the right, laying it against the right flap. Place the model flat on the table.
additional information
- You now have a pentagon shape with a smooth front face and four flaps at the bottom.
Step 16.
Creating a Petal Fold (Front): Fold the lower right edge of the front flap to the vertical center axis using the existing crease.
Step 17.
Fold the lower left edge of the front flap to the vertical center axis using the existing crease.
Step 18.
Fold the top triangle down along the horizontal line created by the flaps. Crease well through all layers, then unfold.
Step 19.
Unfold the two side triangles from Step 16 and 17.
Step 20.
Lift the first layer of the bottom tip. As you lift it toward the top, the sides should naturally begin to fold inward.
Step 21.
Continue pushing the tip upward until it is flat. Flatten the side edges toward the center line.
additional information
- You now have a long diamond shape (Petal Fold).
Step 22.
Flip the model over.
Step 23.
Second Petal Fold: Repeat steps 16 through 21 on this side.
additional information
- The model is now a vertical diamond. The bottom half has two points; the top half has three flaps.
Step 24.
On the top front flap, fold the right edge down to the horizontal center line. Crease and unfold.
Step 25.
Fold the left edge of the same flap down to the horizontal center line. Crease and unfold.
Step 26.
Using those creases, bring both edges to the center line simultaneously. The top point will stand up (Rabbit Ear Fold).
Step 27.
Fold this standing point to the right, then to the left to pre-crease it.
Step 28.
Flip the model and repeat steps 24–27.
additional information
- You now have two long tapered points pointing left (9 o'clock) and right (3 o'clock).
Step 29.
Fold the front right flap over to the left (like turning a page).
Step 30.
Flip the entire model over.
Step 31.
Fold the front right flap over to the left again.
additional information
- The front and back faces are now smooth.
Step 32.
Fold the front bottom triangular flap upward using the horizontal hinge.
Step 33.
On this flap, fold the lower right edge upward to the vertical center line.
Step 34.
Fold the lower left edge upward to the vertical center line.
Step 35.
Flip the model over.
Step 36.
Repeat steps 32–34 on this side.
additional information
- The model now consists of two superimposed kite shapes with long points tucked between them.
Step 37.
Pick up the model. Rotate it so the long tapered tips point toward the ceiling and floor, and the kite tips point toward you.
Step 38.
Slide your thumbs between the two kites. Place your fingers on the small triangles on the sides.
Step 39.
Spread your thumbs apart until the kite tips move to 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock.
Step 40.
Close the model by folding the kites in half.
additional information
- The model now looks like a vertical cross.
Step 41.
Fold the top vertical branch down against the left horizontal branch.
Step 42.
Fold the bottom vertical branch up against the right horizontal branch.
Step 43.
Lay the model on the table. You will see a sequence of layers (small triangles and long points) on both sides.
Step 44.
Lift the small triangle on the first layer (left side) to a vertical position.
Step 45.
On the long tapered point (left), fold the top edge down to the bottom horizontal edge. This narrows the point. The small triangle returns to its flat position.
Step 46.
Flip the model over.
Step 47.
Move the medium point on the right over to the left.
Step 48.
Lift the small triangle on the right to a vertical position.
Step 49.
Narrow the long point on the right by folding the top edge down to the bottom edge.
Step 50.
Move the medium point back to the right.
Step 51.
Flip the model over.
Step 52.
Repeat the narrowing process (Steps 44–50) for the remaining layers.
Step 53.
Fold the tip of the small triangle (right side) downward so it points at 6 o'clock.
Step 54.
Move the medium point from the left to the right.
Step 55.
Fold the tip of the small triangle (left side) downward to 6 o'clock.
Step 56.
Flip the model over.
Step 57.
Repeat steps 53–55 on this side. (These four small triangles are the legs).
Step 58.
Hold the model by the legs. One medium point should point toward you and the other away from you (these are the wings).
Step 59.
On the long point on the right (the tail), mark a point about one-third of the way from the tip.
Step 60.
Fold the tip upward at that point. Crease and unfold.
Step 61.
Reverse the fold to make a mountain fold. Crease and unfold.
Step 62.
Open the flap slightly and perform an Inside Reverse Fold so the tail points upward.
Step 63.
Hold the model by the left side.
Step 64.
Fold the long left point (the neck) upward diagonally. Crease and unfold.
Step 65.
Reverse the fold into a mountain fold. Crease and unfold.
Step 66.
Perform an Inside Reverse Fold to lift the neck upward.
Step 67.
Identify a point one-third of the way up the neck.
Step 68.
Fold the tip downward at a 45° angle. Crease and unfold.
Step 69.
Reverse the fold into a mountain fold. Crease and unfold.
Step 70.
Perform an Inside Reverse Fold to create the head/beak.
Step 71.
At the very tip of the beak, fold a small section upward. Crease and unfold.
Step 72.
Reverse the fold into a mountain fold. Crease and unfold.
Step 73.
Perform an Inside Reverse Fold to finish the head detail (the horn).
Step 74.
Gently curve or "inflate" the medium tapered tips (the wings) with your fingers to give the dragon volume.
